In the Youth Sailing group sailors learn and enjoy sailing on different types of dinghies and windsurfing boards. You sail together or alone, learning and practicing the basics of sailing: steer the boat or board, make turns and sail in all wind directions.
The program is modified during the season according to the wishes of the group, and the goal is above all to experience the joy of sailing in good company!
The Youth Sailing group does not aim for competitions, but if they wish, the members of the group can take part in HSS club competitions as a team or as individuals. Our professional and experienced coaches plan the program together with the sailors as the season progresses. In time, you can move from the group to the HSS sailing school for adults, keelboat crews or HSS junior racing, if you become more interested in racing.

Skill requirement: Good swimming skills, i.e. can swim 50m

Working as a group while focusing on your own performance
Sailors learn versatile water sports skills and can later choose which equipment to continue with.
Schedule
-The group starts at the beginning of May, as soon as the weather permits.
-You can also join the group later in the summer, e.g. from a summer camp
-Training twice a week Wed 17-19.30 and Fri 17-19.30
-Water training continues until the end of September or start of October, depending on the weather
-In October, weekly exercises are held indoors with theory, physical training and games
-During the winter season, physical training once a week

All Juniors in the training program join as junior members of HSS. The membership fee in 2026 is €73. Member benefits include e.g. ferry transport, SPV group accident insurance, discounts in the island's restaurants and the club newsletter. A refund is possible 30 days before confirmed training start minus a non-refundable admin fee 50€ paid at signup. After, refunds are not made but the signup can be transferred to another person with a written notice to HSS. If HSS cancels the group, a full refund is made.
We offer two trial sessions for new beginners who do not yet have sailing experience. If you want to come try it out, feel free to contact the Junior manager or the Junior head coach! Contact information here.
Gear
The group sails on HSS dinghies and boards. You only need the following:
Your own life vest, suitable for dinghy sailing
Dry set of clothes
Wetsuit (3-4mm, long-legged and long-sleeved or a 2-piece), neoprene shoes (3-5mm), towel and warm-up jacket
Optional: In May and September we recommend a dry suit
Note: used equipment is often available in sailing and equipment FB groups and on the tori.fi website
The coaches are happy to instruct regarding gear!
Parents role
HSS junior training programs are possible thanks to parents volunteering. As a volunteer, you get to know the sailor’s hobby better, meet other parents and club members, and get to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Liuskasaari. There are many kinds of tasks and even a small contribution is valuable! This can be, for example, organizing events, the club's junior communications, social media marketing, maintaining equipment, or finding sponsors.
Each family participates in two ‘talkoo’ volunteering days. These are held in spring and autumn, and you can choose the days that suit you. Common spaces and equipment are taken care of. You learn and get support from more experienced people and it’s a fun day outdoors. Any relative, godfather or friend of the junior can join! Alternatively, you can choose a fee.
